Demolding-free tungsten carbide dies for reliable FTIR spectroscopy sample preparation
Cell Lab Dry Pellet Pressing Dies are specially engineered for preparing potassium bromide (KBr) pellets in infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Unlike traditional dies, these demolding-free designs allow the sample holder with pellet to be placed directly into the instrument, effectively reducing the risk of pellet breakage during handling.
Manufactured from high-hardness tungsten carbide, these dies provide the strength necessary for compressing both ceramic and metallic powders into robust, uniform pellets. Available in 3 mm and 7 mm sample sizes, they are optimised for analytical laboratories requiring reproducibility, convenience, and high-quality spectra.
Demolding-free design — Pellets remain on the sample holder for direct FTIR measurement, preventing breakage.
High-strength tungsten carbide — Superior hardness ensures durable performance under high pressure.
Optimised for KBr pellets — Compatible with spectroscopic-grade KBr for superior infrared transmission.
Consistent pellet thickness — 400 mg KBr/sample mix under 6–7 tons yields 1–1.5 mm thick pellets.
Compact & precise — Small cavity design ensures reproducible pellets for sensitive IR spectroscopy.
| Product No. | Reference Sample Size | Cavity Depth (mm) | Die Material | Indenter Hardness | Dimensions (mm) | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PR1074 | Φ3 mm | 5 | Cemented Carbide YT15 | HRC85–90 | 76 × 30 × 70 | 0.35 kg |

Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) — KBr pellet preparation for high-quality transmission spectra.
Ceramics & powders — Compacting fine powders into robust pellets for analytical use.
Pharmaceuticals & chemicals — Sample preparation for trace analysis using FTIR.
Academic research & industrial QC — Standardised pellet pressing for reproducible results.
General spectroscopy labs — Convenient pellet preparation with reduced handling risk.
Q1: Why is the demolding-free design important?
It reduces handling steps and prevents fragile KBr pellets from breaking during transfer.
Q2: How much KBr/sample mixture should I use?
Typically ~400 mg total mix under 6–7 tons pressure produces a 1–1.5 mm thick pellet.
Q3: Can I use these dies with materials other than KBr?
Yes. They can compact various powders, including ceramics and metals, though FTIR is optimised for KBr.
Q4: How can I prevent pellet breakage?
Avoid excess moisture in KBr and use spectroscopic-grade powders for best results.
Q5: How should the die sets be maintained?
Clean and dry after each use; lightly oil surfaces if storing long-term to prevent rust.
